Dun Laoghaire Musical & Dramatic Society (DMDS) has been a vibrant fixture in South Dublin since 1959, founded originally by members of the local Methodist Church. Over 65 years later, our society has grown to over 100 active members, drawing talent from Dún Laoghaire and greater Dublin.

DMDS has a full and lively calendar year-round, with weekly rehearsals, exciting musical productions, social gatherings, and choral events that keep members connected and creatively engaged. Whether you're on stage, singing in the choir, or just enjoying the social side, there's always something happening to get involved in!

WHAT WE DO

MUSICAL

Every year, DMDS proudly brings the magic of musical theatre to life with our highly anticipated Annual Musical Production. A cornerstone of our society’s calendar, this beloved tradition draws together performers, musicians, creatives, and audiences from across the region in a shared celebration of storytelling, song, and stagecraft.From classic favourites to contemporary hits, each production is thoughtfully chosen to challenge our cast and inspire our audiences. PMonths of planning, rehearsals, and collaboration culminate in a series of performances at the Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire, that showcase the vibrant talent within our community. Whether you're stepping into the spotlight or cheering from the front row, the annual musical is more than just a show—it's an experience that captures the spirit of DMDS: community, passion for performance, and endless creativity.

CHORAL

Becoming a member of the DMDS choir means joining a lively and inclusive group that shares a genuine love of music, performance, and camaraderie. Our choir is open to all voices—whether you're an experienced choral singer or just beginning your musical journey.

We rehearse once a week for approximately 8 weeks, typically on a weekday evening, and prepare for several key performances throughout the year. Highlights include our much-loved Christmas concert, which is a seasonal favourite in the local community, and other appearances at festivals, charity events, or collaborative showcases. Beyond the music, the choir is a fantastic way to build friendships and confidence. There's something special about raising your voice with others—you’ll not only grow as a singer, but you’ll also become part of a creative family that supports and uplifts each other.

DRAMA

While musicals are at the heart of what we do, DMDS has a long-standing love for theatre in all its forms. From full-scale dramatic productions to more intimate evenings of one-act plays, we embrace variety and spontaneity. There’s no set rule for when these shows happen—it all depends on the mood and energy of our members. When someone brings an idea and there's a collective spark, we run with it.

Past productions have included everything from comedies and murder mysteries to original short plays, giving members the chance to explore different roles on and off the stage. Whether you’re itching to perform, try your hand at directing, help build a set, or operate lights and sound, there’s always a place for you to contribute. These projects are often more informal than our major musical productions, making them a brilliant way to dip your toes into the world of theatre—especially if you’re new to performing or eager to try something different.

SOCIAL

DMDS is just as much a social society as it is a performing one—and we love a good night out almost as much as a good rehearsal! Our social calendar is full of events designed to help members bond, unwind, and celebrate the work we put in on stage. Expect everything from casual pub meetups and quiz nights to full-on themed parties, karaoke evenings, and our legendary after-show celebrations.

There’s also the annual summer BBQ and festive Christmas gathering, both of which are highlights of the year. Whether you're the life of the party or someone who prefers a quieter chat over a drink, our social events are open, friendly, and inclusive. For many members, these moments are what truly bring DMDS to life—a chance to relax, build lasting friendships, and feel part of something bigger than a cast or crew. You might join DMDS for the music or the drama, but it’s often the people that make you want to stay.
