DMDS will hold a Race Night on Friday 22nd February in Fitzgerald’s of Sandycove. This is a major fund-raising event for the society. You have an opportunity to become an owner of a horse in advance and also to bet on the winners on the night.
Russell Smith has been appointed as Musical Director for our 2013 performance of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. In addition to his role as Musical Director, Russell has many other theatrical skills including Actor, Composer, Tutor, Accompanist and Singer/Songwriter. Russell also has strong family connections with DMDS as his father, Colin Smith, and sisters Sharon and Samantha have played many roles in our performances, while his mother Yvonne designed the sets for many of our shows. Colin was also director of ‘Fiddler’ when it was last performed by the society in 1990. He won ‘Best Director’ from AIMS for this show.
Dun Laoghaire Musical and Dramatic Society will present Fiddler on the Roof at the Pavilion Theatre from Monday 18th March to Saturday 23rd March 2013. This show has enduring popularity with unforgettable songs such as ‘If I were a Rich Man’ and ‘Matchmaker’. It won nine Tony awards and there is the memorable film adaptation. This presentation will be in the hands of DMDS whose award-winning cast look forward to leading you through this much loved show.
DMDS will run a Pub Quiz in Fitzgerald’s of Sandycove on Thursday 8th November. Tables of 4 – €10 per person. Prizes and Spot prizes available. All proceeds will go to funding our 2013 show ‘Fiddler on the Roof’
As you are aware, DMDS shows do not happen by magic and fund-raising is vital for the €25k that we will need to put on ‘Drowsy Chaperone’. This is in addition to what we expect to raise from seat-sales.
One of our fund-raising initiatives this year is a Race Night. This has been successful for us in the past, and with your help we can make it successful this year again. You can help in 2 ways:
You can ‘invest’ in a horse (or two?) in one of the races at a cost of €10. If your horse wins, the prizes are wine and chocolates, and the winners will also be put in a draw for one of 3 Kindles. More details are attached.
You can come along to the Race night on 2nd March in Fitzgerald’s in Sandycove. The races are shown on a screen and you can place bets and also enjoy the company.
If you would like to make a bet on a horse, just tell me which horse(s) you would like to bet on, or just say how much you would like to contribute and I will pick them for you (no guarantees !). A fuller explanation of all of this is available on request.
Your contributions will be very welcome and vital for the success of the show.
DMDS will present the Drowsy Chaperone at the Pavilion Theatre from Tuesday 17th to Saturday 21st April 2012. It will be the Dublin premiere of a hilarious, heart-warming love-story described as a ‘musical within a comedy’.
The US production was an instant sensation on its début on Broadway in 2006, winning 5 Tony Awards. It is based around musical theatre in the Jazz age, and the fans who love it. This presentation of the highly successful show will be in the hands of DMDS whose award-winning cast look forward to leading you through the twists and turns of this hilarious plot.

DMDS rounded off its 50th year celebrations by winning the 2011 award for best Choral Society choir in Ireland for the 6th successive year. The award, the Frank Cullinane Trophy, is presented by the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) which represents 130 societies, involving about 14,000 people. At the competition in New Ross, the DMDS choir was directed by Vincent Lynch with support from Des Cox. The win was a record 6 in-a-row for any society and the pieces performed were Facade, and Bring him Home. The Society also won the Ballyclare Rosebowl trophy for the best Cameo performance (i.e. presentation of a scene from a musical). The wins were particularly welcomed by DMDS as a culmination to the Society’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
