In 2005 DMDS presented ‘Chess’ by Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus (of Abba fame), and lyricist Tim Rice (Evita, The Lion King). Set in the 1980’s against the backdrop of the Cold War, it follows the story of two chess players from the opposing US & USSR camps, and the woman they are both in love with. The music is a mixture of Abba-style pop/rock (‘One Night In Bangkok’), tearjerking solos & duets (‘I Know Him So Well’) and strong choral pieces (‘Merano’, ‘Anthem’).
The show ran once again in the Pavilion Theatre during the week of St Patricks Day 14th-19th March 2005. The cast played to packed houses every night, and recieved two nominations in the AIMS Awards Scheme – for ‘Best Chorus’ and for Jennifer Dalton as ‘Best Female Singer’.
